Tucked into Uganda’s far southwestern corner, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park may be the country’s smallest protected reserve, but it’s one of its most majestic. Spanning just 34 square kilometers, this hidden gem shares a rich ecosystem with Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Virunga — forming the Virunga Conservation Area, one of the most ecologically significant regions in Africa.
Set at altitudes ranging from 2,227 to 4,127 meters, the park is dominated by three spectacular extinct volcanoes: Mount Sabyinyo, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Muhabura. These towering peaks rise out of ancient montane forest and are all accessible for full-day climbs, offering breathtaking views over three nations.
Mgahinga is home to one habituated mountain gorilla family, offering a quieter, more intimate alternative to Bwindi. The endangered golden monkey is another rare highlight, found only in the Albertine Rift. Also keep an eye out for blue monkeys, elephants, buffalo, and over 180 species of birds, including the regal Rwenzori turaco.
This is not just a land of wildlife, but of deep indigenous history. The Batwa people, believed to be one of the oldest surviving forest cultures in Africa, were the original inhabitants of this region. Today, guests can take guided walks led by Batwa elders, gaining a powerful perspective on their traditions, resilience, and symbiotic relationship with the land.
